BREAKING: NEC recommends temporary suspension of planned subsidy removal

The   National Economic Council   (NEC) has agreed that the plan to remove petrol subsidy should not be executed yet.  It however said all preparatory plans with various segment of government, including States and the incoming administration should be intensified. Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, who disclosed these to journalists after the Valedictory NEC meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, however added that Council agreed that the subsidy regime must be removed eventually as it is not sustainable. “Today I was in the National Economic Council, where we discussed the issue of post-subsidy removal. High food prices compound food insecurity, says World Bank

The  World Bank ’s latest Commodity Markets Outlook has shown that high food prices are compounding food insecurity. The report released in Washington DC on Thursday, however, predicts that global commodity prices should decline by 8 per cent this year at the fastest clip since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic, it said, has clouded the growth prospects of almost two-thirds of developing economies that depend on commodity exports. The drop in prices is expected to relieve nearly 350 million people across the world who face food insecurity. The World Bank’s Chief Economist and Senior Vice President for Development Economics, Indermit Gill, said: “The surge in food and energy prices after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has largely passed due to slowing economic growth, a moderate winter, and reallocations in the commodity trade.  But this is of little comfort to consumers in many countries. The 36 states governors are to meet  President Muhammadu Buhari  to discuss with him on the need to present new revenue formular to the 9th National Assembly for passage into law before the end of his administration. Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen after the forum’s meeting on Wednesday in Abuja. Reactions trail DStv, GOtv subscriptions’ hike

Mixed reactions have greeted the planned hike of subscription rates announced by pay Tv company, Multichoice, in Nigeria.  The National Association of Nigerian Students ( NANS ), Southwest Zone gave the pay-tv firm a seven-day ultimatum to reverse its planned hike. Opposing the subscription hike, NANS said the South African company was bringing hardship on, and extorting Nigerians, without considering their standard of living.  Its also  noted that tariffs should be charged on a “pay as you view”.  Also, a social media user, @AsiwajuLerry, said: “The only reason DSTV keep getting away with this ridiculous subscription rates with no significant value is because they have no competition in Africa. PSC dismisses three, reduces ranks of five

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the dismissal of three Assistant Superintendents of Police, (ASPs). The Commission also reduced the rank of an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Chief Superintendent, two Superintendents and one Assistant Superintendent. PSC also approved the severe reprimand of an Assistant Commissioner of Police, a Chief Superintendent of Police, four Superintendents, two Deputy Superintendents and 12 Assistant Superintendents. These were high points of the 20th plenary meeting of the Commission on Wednesday at the Corporate Headquarters of the Commission in Jabi, Abuja presided over by the Commission’s Chairman and former Inspector General of  Police , Dr. Solomon Arase. According to a statement by the Head, Press and Public Relations, PSC, Ikechukwu Ani, the Commission also approved the punishment of reprimand to six Officers, one Superintendent and five Assistant Superintendents.
