Foundation trains journalists on cleft awareness

In a bid to enhance the understanding of Nigerians against stigmatisation and discrimination related to cleft lip and palate,a non-governmental and cleft charity organisation, Smile Train has trained Journalist on the role of the media to curb the stigma, informing the public on free treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

The training focuses on media practitioners in identifying their roles toward positive and responsible presentation of cleft lip and palate related issues in Nigeria

Consultant, Oral, Maxillofacial and Cleft Surgeon, LUTH, Prof. Olugbenga Ogunlewe said cleft is not a curse or life-threatening disease.

She also called on caregivers or patients with cleft to visit LUTH for the free surgery funded by the foundation with a follow up on the treatment

She further said the treatment of cleft is a multi-disciplinary approach with teams like the speech therapist, audiologist, and Nutritionist among others for proper treatment

In her words:” Cleft can be inherited from either of the parents, high risk with family who have a family history of cleft, identification of altered genes.”

Speaking on the theme: “the media as a veritable tool for the demystification of cleft”, the foundation’s PR & communications manager, Africa, Emily Manjeru, said the media plays a vital role in dissemination of information to the public

Manjeru said every three minutes, a child is born with a clef with many of these children living with untreated cleft due to ignorance of the surgical diseases

She said the training and workshop is part of the foundation’s effort to ensure every person born with cleft lives a full an healthy life

Manjeru, then advised journalists to inform the public that the foundation has provided every piece of equipment and funding needed for quality treatment and care of cleft patients free of charge.
