Ikorodu Indigenous Trading Attract Development- Says Otunba Ayodele Elesho

Lagos State's former Commissioner for Information and Strategy, the Agba-Akin of Ikorodu, Otunba Ayodele Elesho historically revealed Ikorodu's indigenous vibrancy in “Commerce, and Industry” in regards to what the Industrial companies contributed to the lives of the people living in Ikorodu, and this country.
This was said at the Ayangbure of Ikorodu’s Kingdom on Saturday, December 9th, 2023.
Says, going on a memory lane of the past decades, talking about the 50s, 60s, and 70s, Ikorodu people were the main traders on the Lagos island. Go to Ereko, go to Gota-ariyo, go anywhere, and you find the Ikorodu people, they are trading, and working.
95, 96% of material sellers, stocks, I mean wool, cotton, fabrics materials are produced by Ikorodu people up till tomorrow. “I can bet you on that”, he said.
So, the Ikorodu has been known for commerce and industry all the while.
In those days, Ikorodu was the only port, We have people from Ijebu, from Iseyin, from Egba, from everywhere, they pass through to go and trade in Lagos.
we had Oko-Owolowo and other canoes, that they would join from here to Lagos Island, and then after that they would come back with their goods here in Ikorodu to sell. We have two markets;👇🏿
1. Is “Iworo Market, and
2. Is “Ebute Market, still existing up till tomorrow, and people are still patronizing the markets from Ijebu-Remo, Egba, Ibadan, Iseyin and so on.
They will bring all their trading materials e.g. Fish, Meat, even clothing materials, and all the rest of them to sell.
The “Iworo Market is every 7-7 days, while the Ebute Market is scheduled on the next day at the new ferry terminal at Ebute to sell their leftover Market. So, people were patronizing the Ikorodu for commerce. And these days, we are just building on the foundation laid by our forefathers and ancestors, go and check data and records, Akin-Akn of Ikorodu said in reference.
Says, he has been involved in the Ikorodu administration for almost 30 years; How many big commercial banks do not have a branch in Ikorodu? “I mean we not begging them to come”, but because of the level of trading activities, they are coming eg, Union Bank, with 2 branches, and Zenith Bank has about 3 branches, and more, Even in Ikorodu central.
In that regard, Ikorodu is booming, the economy is growing, people are trading, people are doing well, and robbery and attack is going down by the grace of God, He said.
Furthermore, “My charge to Nigerians and Lagosians is to exercise some patience”.
“I used to tell people, don't cause this government to bring your present-day experience in, Don't cause them; because if you cause them and they fail to make it, it will bounce back on you and the whole Nigerians”. We need to just to continue to support them with fervent prayers, he said.
Says, “I am a Christian, and I believe in the power of prayers”. We just have to support them to pray for them. And if there are things that you feel they should do, and they should not, if you have a source of getting across to them, do it, said; Otunba Ayodele Elesho.
