Nigerian House of Representatives Proposes Two Vice Presidents for North, South in Reform Bill

The reforms aimed to address longstanding issues of unrest and division by promoting inclusivity and better governance.

The House of Representatives has moved to create the office of two Vice Presidents, representing the Southern and Northern parts of Nigeria, as part of a series of proposed constitutional reforms. The six bills, which have passed their first reading in the House, are sponsored by 35 members.

At a press conference in Abuja, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, spokesperson for the group and representative of Ideato North/South federal constituency, explained that the proposed reforms aim to reduce government expenditure, improve governance efficiency, and enhance national stability.

Ugochinyere highlighted the commitment of the lawmakers to reform Nigeria's political process, noting that constitutional and electoral reform had been a pressing issue since independence from Britain in 1960.

The proposal for two Vice Presidents includes one from the same region as the President, who would succeed the President if incapacitated, and another focused on economic management.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to rotate executive powers among the six geopolitical zones, ensuring equal representation and reducing regional tensions.

The lawmakers called for public support, urging citizens to engage with their representatives and advocate for the passage of these critical reform bills. They emphasized that collective effort and participation are crucial for the success of these reforms, which seek to build a more unified and prosperous Nigeria.
